This disc of the Audio Encyclopedia focusses on the period of the late 1960's through
the 1970's, with reference points in 1952 and 1999. Few of these performances are of
the legendary status of early eras, but many offer great performances by artists who
deserve to be better known. Note that even when there are commercial releases of
productions from this period, the ones presented here have been selected for their
unique virtues. Thus, the two 1976 Götterdämmerung performances can be compared with
one another and with the composite in video and audio distribution. |

Clips with Descriptions
Fragments from complete performances of Wagner's operas are difficult at
best and frustrating to the editor. Since even a single Act is far too long to
offer here, bits and pieces are all that can be offered.
From Siegfried in 1952 under Joseph Keilberth, we hear the
Forging Song with Bernd Aldenhoff (and a bit of
Gerhard Stolze's inimitable Mime).
Hans Knappertsbusch led a memorable Die Meistersinger von
Nüremberg in 1960. The cast included Elisabeth Grümmer, Josef
Greindl, Wolfgang Windgassen, Gerhard Stolze and Elisabeth Schärtel, whom
we hear in the quintet.
Boulez's 1976 Ring is preserved, but in the performance of 9 August,
Brünnhilde was sung by the little known but highly respected Roberta Knie.
There are few tests of the soprano to compare with this,
the Immolation Scene.
