Sir Thomas was a unique figure in twentieth-century music. He combined musicianship, commitment and eloquence to enlighten and entertain audiences for five decades. It seems fitting, then, that the first volume of the Audio Encyclopedia to be devoted to this unique conductor, examines his work through recordings which are not widely available.

At the heart of the collection are the five operas he conducted at Teatro Colón in 1958:
Carmen with Jean Madeira and Pier Miranda Ferraro
Fidelio with Gre Brouwenstijn and Hans Hopf
Otello with Ramón Vinay, Antonietta Stella and Giuseppe Taddei
Samson et Dalila with Blanche Thebom and Ramón Vinay
Die Zauberflöte with Pilar Lorengar, Rita Streich, Anton Dermota and Arnold van Mill

The other complete opera recordings cover an even wider range of styles:
Aida: 1939 with Caniglia, Stignani, Gigli and Borgioli
Ariadne auf Naxos: 1950 with Zadek, Hollweg and Anders
The Bartered Bride: 1939 with Konetzni and Tauber
Les deux journées (Cherubini): 1947 with Micheau
   Elektra: 1947 with Schlüter
Faust: 1929 with Nash, Licette and Easton
Le jolie fille de Parth: 1949 with Catley, Dyer and Richard Lewis
Tristan und Isolde: 1937 with Flagstad and Melchior
Les Troyens: 1947 (broadcast) with Giraudeau and Ferrer
A Village Romeo and Juliet: 1948 (broadcast) with Terry and Soames

Complementing the complete sets are abridged and excerpted operas:
La Bohème (Act IV): 1935 with Perli and Nash
Tales of Hoffmann (abridged): 1951 with Schock and Metternich
Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (excerpts): 1936 with Lemnitz, Ralf and Bockelmann
Die Meistersinger von Nürnberg (excerpts): 1951 with Grümmer, Hotter and Anders

Sir Thomas's interests extended far beyond opera, so we have included both oratorio and orchestral selections:
Messiah: 1947 with Suddaby, Thomas, Nash and Antony
   Mozart Symphonies 31, 40, 41: 1937
   Sibelius Symphony 2: 1954
Delius Concerto for Piano and Orchestra: 1946 with Betty Humby Beecham
