AE210, "Bulgarian National Radio - Italian, French and German Operas", features some well-known artists and many who were seldom heard outside of Bulgaria. Apart from the basses Nikola Ghiaurov and Nicolai Ghiuselev, the sopranos Ghena Dimitrova and Stefka Evstatieva are heard here in some of their earliest and most exciting recordings. In this brief summary, the focus is on the two great basses. The recordings on this disc are offered in full fidelity and where available in stereo.

Boito: Mefistofele
The only production of Mefistofele in Bulgaria was heard
in 1983 in Sofia. The Faust (Kaludi Kaludov) and Margherita (Stefka Evstatieva)
are deservedly well known. So, too, is the mighty Nikola Ghiuselev, heard here
in stereo as on the CD-ROM. All other selections are here in monaural though
those broadcast in stereo are on the disc in that form.
"Ave Signor!"
Verdi: Don Carlo
Broadcast from Sofia in stereo, this selection offers Ghiaurov's
first Italian performance as Philip. The selection is, of course,
"Ella giammai m'amo ... Dormiro sol"
Verdi: Nabucco
The cast of this 1968 monaural broadcast is uniformly excellent
with Dimitrova's Abigaille deserving of selection, but not on this page.
Instead, here is Ghiaurov's
"Vieni o Levita! ... Tu sul labbro"
Gounod: Faust
Even as early as 1959, Ghiaurov's instrument stood out; the
evidence is clear in
"Le veau d'or"
Unlike the other selections here but like most of the material on the
CD-ROM, Ghiaurov is heard in Bulgarian rather than the original language. For
most listeners to these 'standard' operas, the dislocation is slight and
transient. When the performance is as exciting as this, with Ilija Jossifov as
Faust and Katia Popova as Marguerite, one can easily disregard the language of
the
Final Trio

A Note on the CD-ROM - The disc is available in two versions. The
