Kurt Böhme (1908-1989) plays Kaspar, the villain of Der Freischütz,
in this broadcast. Here, he has succeeded in enticing Max to join him in
the forest to cast the magic bullets. He gloats in "Schweig, schweig, damit dich niemand warnt!"
Josef Greindl (1912-1993) portrays Plunkett in our Martha, and here revels in
the porter's song. It is simply sung by the jolly farmer in praise of
beer. (It might well be that he has first-hand knowledge of the beverage, given his
enthusiasm in the song.)
Wilhelm Strienz (1899-1987) revelled in the comic rôles so popular in German
opera. Here, he is the officious phony, the mayor van Bett in Zar und Zimmermann.
Demonstrating that he is both "klug" and "weise", he brags in bad Latin and overbearing
German: "O sancta justizia".
