Wagner's Ring from Buenos Aires
September/October 1962 - Heinz Wallberg, conductor
|
|
Forty years ago, the Teatro Colón offered Wagner's cycle under the
39-year-old Heinz Wallberg. Still known in Europe for his conducting in major
houses, he has recorded no Wagner operas. On listening to this performance, one
wonders why. If you attended The Ring at any major opera house in the
early 1960's, you would have been likely to hear many of the principals on this
recording. We are happy to offer it as Volume AE102 of the
Audio Encyclopedia with this
remarkable cast:

It is all but impossible to sample The Ring in a few minutes of
audio. Fortunately, most of the principals are well known for their
characterizations in other contemporary recordings. The major unknowns are the
conductor, the company as a whole, and the sound quality - and, of course, the
vocal estate of the principals. The recording on the CD-ROM is in stereo at 112
Kbps.
Clips with Descriptions
"Fort denn eile" in stereo is exactly as on
the disc. Even with a broadband connection, you may prefer to download the file
to audition later; its takes about 3.2 Megabytes.
For comparison and at a more practical size,
"Fort denn eile" in monaural is here at our
usual 32 Kbps (900 KB), as is
Wotans Abschied from "Der Augen leuchtendes
Paar" (2.4 MB)
NOTES
- A few minutes at the end of Götterdämmerung Act II have been lost
and are replaced with a later Colón performance.
- An embarassing and repeated typographic error in the conductor's name could
not be corrected before pressing. My apologies are extended to Herr Wallberg.
